The Brief
A Houghton Ridge Estate residence called for a home that could hold its own against one of Johannesburg’s most commanding settings. The brief was unapologetically bold: dark, dramatic, deeply luxurious — but never cold. Every room needed warmth built into the darkness, and every piece of furniture had to feel like it belonged to a collector rather than a catalogue.
The Living Room
The lounge is anchored by a full-height Nero Marquina black marble feature wall with white and gold veining, a linear gas fireplace at its base casting warm amber light across the room. BLOCK shelving towers in Congo supergloss black flank the wall with warm LED strip lighting, styled with bronze sculptures, ceramics and art books. An oversized curved dark charcoal boucle sectional sofa with cream and teal cushions faces a round black marble coffee table beneath a sculptural aged brass chandelier.
The Formal Dining Room
The dining room pairs Nero Marquina marble with a DYNAMIQ smoked glass credenza in Congo supergloss black — its amber-lit interior shelving glowing warmly against the dark marble wall. A large round 8-seater dining table in Napoca walnut with a brushed brass base anchors the room, surrounded by high-back forest green velvet dining chairs on brass legs. A sculptural aged brass cluster pendant casts warm focused light over the table.
The Master Bedroom
The master suite features a Nero Marquina marble feature wall with a warm amber LED halo behind the bed. A wide BLOCK platform bed in Napoca walnut with a full-width curved Congo supergloss upholstered headboard panel commands the room. Floating walnut bedside pedestals with aged brass dome table lamps create intimate warm pools of light against the dark. Layered cream linen with a deep teal velvet throw at the foot completes the composition.
The Walk-in Wardrobe
A dedicated dressing room lined with full-perimeter BLOCK Congo supergloss wardrobe cabinetry with integrated warm LED strip lighting. A Napoca walnut island dresser with aged brass pulls and velvet cushion top sits centre, flanked by a large oval aged brass framed full-length mirror against a Nero Marquina marble panel. Warm recessed spotlights and a cream boucle ottoman complete a space that feels more private boutique than storage room.
